Soils of Sci-Fi – “Dirt” as a Worldbuilding Tool in our Favorite Stories

Fiske Planetarium 2414 Regent Dr, Boulder, CO, us

Our favorite science fiction stories not only come with iconic protagonists, but with vivid imagery of the landscapes they are exploring. What is at the foundation of these imagined worlds and landscapes? Soil. The beautiful ecosystems in Sci-Fi stories would not be possible without using soil as a seemingly small but necessary tool for building the worlds of science fiction. In this talk, we will walk through the fundamentals of soil (including soil types, biota and the life of a soil) by looking at stories from Star Wars, Dune and Children of Time. We will see that our Earthly soil is not so different from imagined planets' soils, like Tatooine, and, most importantly, that soil is so much more than what we often might think of as just "dirt."
