Did our efforts succeed? Will the Board of Commissioners listen to the people of El Paso County and refuse to gerrymander their own districts?
Nevertheless, find out next Thursday, when the Board officially votes on the new district boundaries. The vote is late on the agenda (item 13), so make sure to come even if you are running a little late.
If you are unfamiliar with the details, the shortest version is this: in choosing its redistricting plans, the county decided to split the Monument municipality between two districts (1&3) instead of simply uniting Patty Jewett under one district (3). The reason for this blatant example of gerrymandering is obvious–the Republicans nearly lost District 3 in 2016. They have controlled all 5 county commissioner seats since five were established in the 1970s. They intend to keep it that way, and prefer as little public input as possible in the process.
