DETAILS ON TODAY’S RALLY OUTSIDE THE MARRIOTT
👉Try carpooling or taking the light rail to get to the protest, but if you need to utilize parking, make plans ahead of time. Here are a few parking suggestions http://bit.ly/2yJnQsn. And here is our carpool link: https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/jy36ce
👉 Our rally starts at 3:30 and will be on both sidewalks (east and west) along Syracuse St, out in front of the Marriott Hotel (see address in the event above). Non-handmaid protestors should make their way there at 3:30PM. Please note there will be reserved areas for handmaids on the west side of the sidewalks.
👉 HANDMAIDS: If you plan to be a handmaid (either with your own outfit, or if you plan to borrow one from us), please meet at 2:45 at Belleview Light Rail station to get costumed and trained, so that all handmaids can walk as a group to join the protesters on the west side of Syracuse St. *Remember that Belleview Light Rail doesn’t offer good long-term parking, so please carpool, take the light rail, and/or expect to park off-site. Remember also that our costumes are first come, first served.
👉 Dress warmly, Colorado!!
👉 We have some truly great speakers lined up. Here’s the current list of orgs who will speak:
– Interfaith Alliance
– NARAL ProChoice Colorado
– Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado
– One Colorado
– ACLU Colorado
– EDF Action
👉 Obvious reminder that we are working directly with Denver Police Department and this rally, like all Indivisible events, is a nonviolent protest. If there are counter protesters present, we will advise all rallygoers to practice the timeworn tactics of effective nonviolence: Do not engage. Let your signs and chants do the talking. And don’t let anyone distract *you* from the reason you are there: to send a clear, unified message to Pence that Colorado rejects his discriminatory policies.
Vice President Mike Pence will be in Denver for a fundraiser this month. Below are a mere handful of the reasons why we must come out and peacefully protest his appearance in our state. Thursday’s event will involve handmaids in full dress (as well as supporters holding signs) peacefully standing in silence as attendees arrive for the fundraiser.
Partners in this protest include: OneColorado, NARAL Colorado, The Colorado Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Indivisible Front Range Resistance, Indivisible Denver, Indivisible Colorado District 6, EDF Action, Planned Parenthood Votes Colorado, and others.
Mike Pence on redefining rape: “Under federal law, the only exceptions for which abortion can be performed with federal funds is in case of rape or incest. […] So Pence attempted to change the definition of rape to include only what he described as ‘forcible rape.'”
Mike Pence on defunding Planned Parenthood: “Congressman Pence authored a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, completely removing all federal funding from the group […] When asked if he’d be go as far as to shut down government over it, Pence responded in the affirmative: ‘Of course I am.'”
Mike Pence on birth control: “The Senate voted to overturn protections for Title X, the nation’s family planning program. The vote was tied until Vice President Pence jumped in to vote against Title X and the 4 million people who depend on it for birth control, well-woman exams, and more essential care.”
Mike Pence on condoms: “In 2002 Pence said that ‘…condoms are a very, very poor protection against sexually transmitted diseases,’ and using condoms as a solution to STDs was ‘too modern.'”
Pence on working mothers: “In a letter to the editor of Indianapolis Star, Pence argued that households with two working parents are under a spell of ‘the big lie that Mom doesn’t matter.’ This expert asserted that having both parents work would lead to ‘stunted emotional growth’ in their children.”
Mike Pence on women serving in the military: “‘the hard truth of our experiment with gender integration [in the military] is that is has been an almost complete disaster for the military and for many of the individual women involved.'”
Mike Pence on LGBTQ rights: “As governor, Pence signed a law to legalize discrimination against LGBTQ people: The ‘religious freedom’ law gave businesses the green light to discriminate against LGBTQ people on religious grounds. ”
Mike Pence on gay marriage: “‘societal collapse was always brought about following an advent of the deterioration of marriage and family.’ In short, Pence said that gay and lesbians being able to marry one another would lead to disastrous outcomes in society.”
