Student Voices in Education: SV2 Kickoff Stakeholder Meeting

December 6, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

One of the major roles of the US public education system is to prepare young people for the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. We teach our children about the value of democracy, and challenge them to play an active role in their communities’ civic life. But while we teach and challenge our youth in this way, most of them will never have the opportunity to practice the most basic act civic life – voting in an election – until after they turn 18 and graduate high school. Now more than ever, in this era of bitter partisanship and record-low voter turnout, we need to ensure that our young people learn how to engage in healthy debate on civic decisions and form positive voting habits early on. To help accomplish that aim, we are building a coalition of organizations and individuals seeking to change Colorado state law to allow 16- and 17-year olds the right to vote in school board elections. We encourge anyone who is interested in learning more about our campaign and those who want to get involved to come.
We will start off with social time from 5:30-6:00 and start our stakeholder meeting at 6:00. There will be drinks and snacks provided. All are welcome.
