WHY: On Sept. 26, the CEO for JPMorgan Chase – Jamie Dimon – is coming to Denver. Please join us for an action to “Tell Chase: Stop Funding Climate Disaster and Human Rights Abuses!”
As you may know, JPMorgan Chase is the top Wall Street bank for funding fossil fuels, including tar sands oil, fracking, and related mega-infrastructure projects. They are part of all the loans and corporate financing for Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline, Enbridge Line 3, Transcanada’s KXL & Energy East, the Dakota Access Pipeline, and they are financing fracking here in Colorado.
Climate change is here now and getting worse, as exemplified by the recent hurricanes tragedies in Houston and Florida and terrible wildfires burning across the western US causing dangerous air quality here in Colorado. And we’ve seen too many of our own recent record-breaking floods and wildfires.
Financing new fossil fuel projects at this point in history is a climate crime. Science tells us that 80% of known fossil fuels must stay underground to stay under 1.5-2 degree C temperature rise. In fact, 20% of fossil fuels currently under production/development must never be burned and no new fossil fuels can be brought online to stay below 2 degrees C temperature rise.
It is also a crime to subject people to the human rights abuses endured by Water Protectors at Standing Rock and the daily assaults to the health and safety of people living by fracking and tar sands oil projects.
Join us on Sept. 26th to make sure that JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon hears us loud and clear when he visits Denver that financing these fossil fuel projects is a crime.
The cities of Denver and Boulder are currently banking with JPMorgan Chase, so we’ll meet first at 11am at City Hall to deliver a letter to our Mayor’s Office demanding that the City divest taxpayer funds from JPMorgan Chase. Then we’ll walk 2 blocks over to the JPMorgan Chase headquarters to demand that JPMorgan Chase divest from fossil fuels! Anyone who banks currently with Chase and is ready to move your money, please email Micah@350colorado.org and come prepared to transfer your funds.
Let’s stop the financing of climate disaster and human rights abuses, starting with one of the top financiers – JPMorgan Chase! Please spread the word!
