In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly approved the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and President Obama endorsed it in 2010 with some qualifications. In countries all around the world, Indigenous leaders are working to implement the Declaration within their own legal systems. Here in the United States, the Native American Rights Fund and the University of Colorado School of Law collaborate in The Implementation Project which seeks to implement the Declaration in this country.

We are honored to offer this webinar featuring Professor Kristen A. Carpenter, co-director of The Implementation Project. Professor Carpenter is the Council Tree Professor of Law and Director of the American Indian Law Program at the University of Colorado Law School. She was appointed to the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as its member from North America from 2017-2021. During the Biden administration, she was an advisor to U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland on international legal issues affecting Indigenous Peoples.

Professor Carpenter will highlight the challenges and the strategies for implementing the U.N. Declaration in the U.S.  What difference would it make for Native Americans?
