SUMMARY:City of Boulder Juneteenth Flag Raising
DESCRIPTION:The City of Boulder will raise the Juneteenth Flag. \nJuneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. \nAlthough Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in Confederate states free on January 1\, 1863\, many enslaved people remained in bondage because the Union Army could not enforce the proclamation everywhere during the Civil War. \nOn June 19\, 1865\, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and announced that enslaved people in Texas were free. For many\, this was the first time they learned of their freedom\, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. \nThe date became known as “Juneteenth\,” combining “June” and “nineteenth.” Black communities began celebrating it as a day of freedom\, remembrance\, family gatherings\, education\, and cultural pride. \nToday\, Juneteenth serves as both: \n\nA celebration of Black freedom\, resilience\, and achievement.\nA reminder that freedom and equality have often been delayed\, contested\, and incomplete in American history.

SUMMARY:13 Fires: Displacement by Design
DESCRIPTION:13 Fires: Displacement by Design\nA powerful and necessary dialogue inspired by the themes of 13 Fires. This gathering invites community members\, artists\, advocates\, and policy thinkers to explore the realities of displacement\, past and present\, and how systems of redlining\, urban renewal\, and gentrification have reshaped communities in Indianapolis\, Boulder\, Denver\, and beyond. \nTogether\, we will examine how these patterns are not isolated\, but part of a broader design one that extends across cities and even globally. Through shared insight\, lived experience\, and critical conversation\, we aim to deepen our understanding of how displacement operates and whom it impacts most. \nThis is more than a conversation. \n13 Fires; Displacement by Design is a space to move from awareness to action\, centering the question: What can we do\, together\, to create lasting change? The dialogue will intentionally build toward identifying and supporting tangible housing policy solutions\, channeling our collective energy into meaningful\, systemic impact. \n

SUMMARY:13 Fires
DESCRIPTION:Executive Committee\, African American Cultural Events is proud to present an original stageplay by Boulder’s own Curtis K. Rogers. \n13 Fires tells the story of Indiana Avenue—once a thriving Black cultural mecca in Indianapolis. The Avenue was alive with jazz clubs\, Black-owned businesses\, and legendary performers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. It was also home to Madam C.J. Walker\, whose success symbolized the power\, creativity\, and resilience of the community that built the neighborhood. \nBut this vibrant district did not disappear by accident. \n13 Fires recounts how a city was taken under the promise of “progress.” When the university now known as IUPUI expanded into the area\, property was systematically bought up and the neighborhood was dismantled. Through the threat of eminent domain\, redlining\, and sharply rising property taxes\, families who had built a flourishing Black community were pushed out and relocated into substandard housing. \nThe homes they were forced into were never meant to sustain life—but the people endured.\nThrough intimate family moments\, memories of the Avenue’s golden era\, and the painful reality of displacement\, 13 Fires explores the human cost of so-called progress. The play confronts themes of economic inequality\, systemic injustice\, and the ways vulnerable communities are often sacrificed in the name of development. \nAt its heart\, 13 Fires is a story about memory\, survival\, and the enduring spirit of a people whose culture and legacy continue to burn brightly despite attempts to erase them
