Trash the Runway
Trash The Runway®, is a nonprofit organization that hosts a design competition using fashion, creativity, and sustainability as a catalyst to unlock resilience, confidence, and new ways of critical thinking in young people. Middle and high school students are challenged to source, design, and create a high-fashion garment made entirely out of found, non-recyclable or non-compostable materials entirely on their own. Over the years, participants have used everything from discarded dog food bags, climbing rope, bicycle inner tubes, and trampoline material, to bubble wrap, tea bags, computer keyboards, wallpaper samples, carpet backing, race bibs, and more.
Participants have two months to complete their design, creating garments that range from elegant evening gowns to whimsical leisure attire and funky streetwear. The final garments are showcased at a runway fashion show and competition that rivals the beauty and creativity of the couture seen on the catwalks during New York or Paris Fashion Week.
