SUMMARY:The Genocide of Native Hawaiians
DESCRIPTION:The Genocide of Native Hawaiians\nWhen: Dec 4\, 6pm-7:30pm \nWhere: Virtual \nREGISTER HERE! \nKalaniākea translates as Sky Father\, descended from the heavens. He traces his genealogy to the origin of the Hawaiian race over 25\,000 years ago. Hawaiian society developed into a highly sophisticated society over millennia and thrived in the middle of the largest ocean in the Pacific. Soon after contact\, Hawaiian chiefs won recognition under international law as the Hawaiian Kingdom. The U.S. invasion on January 16\, 1893\, initiated a state of war that continues today. Genocidal policies have persisted through the establishment of the territory in 1900 and statehood in 1959. Kalaniākea will outline this history and its ongoing consequences\, based on his PhD dissertation research. He will lift up contemporary movements to defend Native Hawaiians’ rights to land\, language\, culture\, and sovereignty. \nThis event is taking the place of the previously-planned event: Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka ʻĀina I Ka Pono\, the Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness\, which needed to be postponed for medical reasons. \nThis is a virtual presentation. Please register below for the zoom link.

SUMMARY:Requiem for an American Dream\, showing and conversation
DESCRIPTION:Requiem for an American Dream\, showing and conversation\nWhen: Dec 6\, 6pm-9pm \nWhere: First Congregational Church\, Boulder \nTICKETS HERE! \nREQUIEM FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM features Noam Chomsky\, widely regarded as the most important intellectual alive\, on the defining political reality of our time: the deliberate and destructive concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a select few. Through profoundly personal\, accessible\, and thought-provoking interviews filmed over four years\, Chomsky unpacks the principles that have led to a half-century of policies designed to benefit the wealthy at the expense of the vast majority Americans\, and lays bare how these policies have destroyed the middle class and eroded the proper functioning of our democracy. At the same time\, Chomsky reflects on his own life of dissident activism\, providing invaluable historical context for our current political moment. \nBoulder SURJ is proud to present the next event of our Justice Film Series! Doors will open at 6PM. The programming will begin at 6:15 sharp\, so plan on arriving early to allow time for parking and finding snacks & seating before the movie starts. \nWe will have excellent community facilitators to lead conversation after the showing\, to be determined as of right now. \nThis event is FREE\, though donations are welcome so that we can contiue our programming into 2025 and keep paying our filmmakers and facillitators while maintaining a zero cost experience and remain open to all who would like to come! If you are able\, please donate through our 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor\, Longmont Community Foundation.

SUMMARY:"Inaccessible" Presented by onX
DESCRIPTION:“Inaccessible” Presented by onX\nWhen: Dec 9\, 6:30pm \nWhere: Boulder Theater \nTICKETS HERE! \n\n\nJoin us for the premiere of “Inaccessible\,” a powerful new film that inspires\, educates\, and mobilizes a movement for our public lands. \nIn this one-of-a-kind story\, ski film veteran Griffin Post joins fellow athletes Eric Jackson and Emilé Zynobia to look beyond the steepest lines and biggest peaks to find public land on an expedition into a landscape divided. “Inaccessible” reveals landlocked boundaries that partition millions of acres of public land from the public\, and follows a search for something deeper than snow. A ski film that tackles an issue commonly known to hunters\, this film reveals that landlocked land is bigger than any single boundary line or pursuit. \nFollowing the screening\, a live panel discussion will feature athletes from the film\, Ryan “Cal” Callaghan from MeatEater\, and Jim Petterson from the Trust for Public Land. The conversation will be moderated by Whitney Potter Schwartz from Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. \nExplore new products and enjoy giveaways from onX and film partners\, including Smartwool\, Decked\, and Tin Cup. \nDon’t miss the kickoff event of the snow season! \nLearn more about “Inaccessible” at onXmaps.com/inaccessible \n\n\n

SUMMARY:SAVE NCAR!
DESCRIPTION:SAVE NCAR!\nWhen: Dec 20\, 11am-1pm \nWhere: NOAA\, Boulder \nYesterday\, the Trump regime stated that they plan to dismantle and shutter the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder\, CO. Russell Vought\, the director of the Office of Management and Budget announced on X yesterday that they “will be breaking up NCAR”.  They claim it is a source of “climate alarmism”. \nWe know otherwise.  The UN\, leaders around the world\, and research scientists all say that the devastating effects of climate change are real.  Just look at the devastating storms\, flooding\, wildfires\, and droughts affecting our county\, country\, and world!  The valuable work that NCAR and other federal science agencies do saves lives and helps people avert weather-related dangers. \nJoin us on Saturday\, December 20\, from 11:00am to 1:00pm in a visibility event.  Meet in front of NOAA on South Broadway and Rayleigh. Although we’re focusing on NCAR\, this is a highly visible place to show that we demand that NCAR be saved!  Bring signs with a “SAVE NCAR” pro-science theme.  Please take an RTD bus if you can.

SUMMARY:Falling In Love With The Future
DESCRIPTION:Falling In Love With The Future\nWhen: Dec 27\, 9:30am-4pm \nWhere: Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder \nREGISTER HERE! \nWe’re building a time machine! \nCome join us on as we test it out for the first time and travel into the future. Not just any future though. We’re taking a trip to the best-case-scenario future that’s not too far away: the year 2032. \nIn this timeline\, humanity came together in 2026\, coalescing to rapidly address our interconnected crises of climate change\, social inequity\, and the complex web of other environmental and social problems. We’re going to see what this world looks like just six years from now\, as large-scale societal shifts are under way. \nWhat does it feel like\, taste like\, sound like in the best-case-scenario future? What spurred this shift\, and how has daily life changed for humanity? \nThis is our first time running our new workshop\, “Falling In Love With The Future.” Part theater game\, part art project\, part grief\, and part radical hope\, this day is for anybody who feels hopeless\, helpless\, overwhelmed\, or burned-out when facing the future. \nOur failure to act as a society is first and foremost a failure of the imagination. Our society\, especially our young people\, need more imaginative spaces where we don’t just beat our heads against present inaction\, but collectively create the future of our dreams. Right now\, the best that most young people can offer is a future where we’ve done a few engine swaps on gas cars. It’s time for something more hopeful. \nYou can expect the workshop to be active\, fun\, and engaging. The goal in using our time machine is to offer people a space that exists outside the ordinary\, where we can dream together. The neural pathways used for imagining the future are the same ones used for visiting our memories\, and our time machine is helping us to build our very real capacity to bring about a more beautiful future.

SUMMARY:A Return to the Earth: Module 1 Cultural Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:A Return to the Earth: Module 1 Cultural Perspectives\nWhen: Jan 10\, 1:30-3pm \nWhere: Virtual \nREGISTER HERE! \nModule One defines culture and expands and elaborates upon cultural perceptions as they relate to our personal lives and the lives of our ancestors and how that affects us today. \nWe will probe deeply into common and personal landscapes of culture and what this means as we move toward being decolonized people. As human beings we mirror each other and long to connect\, to interact\, to create relationship with\, to live with a sense of belonging and a sense of shared “commons\,” a place where we fully realize that “other” is essential for self-fulfillment as a human being. We need each other. \nAs we move into relationships\, we come to understand the cultural lens through which we see the world. How a person sees the world is how a person acts toward the world. \nThis is the first module of a 4-part series. You are encouraged (but not required) to also register for as many of the other modules as you are able to attend: \nModule 2: Seeing with a Native Eye — Saturday\, January 24th\, 2026 \nModule 3: Colonization — Saturday\, February 7th\, 2026 \nModule 4: Decolonization — Saturday\, February 21st\, 2026 \nThis is a virtual presentation. Please register below to get the zoom link and the suggested reading.
