DESCRIPTION:Words Before All Else: The Haudenosaunee Greetings to the Natural World\nWhen: May 12\, 7pm-9pm \nWhere: Boulder Unitarian Universalist Church \nREGISTER HERE! \nThis program features a beautiful 20-minute film about the traditional prayer\, “Words Before All Else\,” which is central to the spiritual and cultural beliefs of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee (also known as the Iroquois). Their daily prayer gives thanks to Mother Earth\, Elder Brother Sun\, Grandmother Moon\, water\, animals\, plants\, and all other living things. \n\nThis film interpretation was produced by Dave Bowden of the Sustainable Media Network\, also CRES’s 2004 president. \nAfter the video\, Martin Ogle\, founder of Geo Sapiens\, will explore how this daily prayer of gratitude inspires and guides our actual work for revitalizing our human relationship with Earth and how energy flows through the web of Life. \nThis event is hosted by the Colorado Renewable Energy Society\, co-sponsored by the Sustainable Media Network and Geo Sapiens. \nJoin us in person at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder (5001 Pennsylvania Ave\, Boulder\, CO 80303).

Drawing on Indigenous relational frameworks (land-based\, community-oriented\, interdependent) and Buddhist insights (interbeing\, compassion\, freedom from suffering)\, we will examine how these traditions resonate\, how they differ\, and how together they point toward a lived practice of what might be called “Liberation Dharma.”

In this 90-minute workshop\, we’ll explore how to shift from strain toward embodied compassion by drawing on both contemporary science and timeless contemplative wisdom. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how compassion-based skills support responding—rather than reacting—to stress and overload\, and how we can intentionally awaken our innate capacity for aligned care when the weight of caring begins to feel like too much. We’ll examine key insights from research on burnout and resilience\, and ground them in experiential practices that help translate understanding into lived experience. \nBy the end of our time together\, you’ll leave with practical tools and an accessible practice to help transform overwhelm into compassionate presence—so you can care without collapse and remain open\, connected\, and effective. \nOffered as part of Naropa University’s Café Contemplative series\, this session invites you into shared inquiry\, reflection\, and practical skill-building—whether you’re new to contemplative practice or deeply engaged in related work. \nThis free workshop also serves as an orientation to our upcoming Mindful Compassion Training\, beginning March 10. While the past year may have felt the heaviness of the world and chose to look inward and perhaps even go underground\, now is the time to alight our connections with all sentient beings.  The work of liberation requires going beyond our boundaries of comfort and needs to include all beings. During this two-hour webinar session\, we will engage in lecture\, practice\, and experiential exercise that support widening our circles for collective liberation.
