SUMMARY:Virtual Film Screening: Vs. Goliath: Port Arthur
DESCRIPTION:The Union of Concerned Scientists invites you to the final installment in a free\, monthly virtual screening series of Vs. Goliath—a powerful\, award-winning new documentary series following everyday people across the United States as they stand up to the fossil fuel industry and fight for the future of their communities. \nThis episode focuses on Port Arthur\, Texas\, a major oil and petrochemical hub. John Beard Jr. worked in an oil refinery there for decades\, as did his father before him. After retiring\, John watches Port Arthur get hollowed out economically\, while his neighbors die from pollution-related illness\, as more dirty plants appear and expand. Experiencing the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey\, John is called to fight back. He becomes a leading opponent of fossil fuels in his community\, including the latest extractive frontier: liquid natural gas (LNG) export terminals. \nVs. Goliath tells stories of courage and resistance from the frontlines of the climate crisis. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with activists from the episode. \nRegister HERE

SUMMARY:Food is Medicine: Three Sisters and Infused Vinegars
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Food is Medicine: Three Sisters and Infused Vinegars with Amy Barcenas on Wednesday\, September 16\, 5:30–7:00 PM. The Three Sisters (corn\, beans\, and squash) are sacred foods that have sustained Indigenous communities across Turtle Island for generations. In this hands-on workshop\, participants will prepare a Three Sisters Salad with a healthy dressing using local and organic ingredients. The class will explore how simple\, whole-food dressings can replace highly processed store-bought options and support everyday wellness. Participants will also create an infused herbal vinegar to take home and use in homemade dressings. Through food preparation and storytelling\, the workshop invites participants to reconnect with ancestral food knowledge and food as medicine. Free Spanish translation and childcare provided. SUMMARY:Mosquito Control: Science\, Risks\, and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Mosquito Control: Science\, Risks\, and Solutions\nWhen: May 19\, 12pm-1pm \nWhere: Virtual \nREGISTER HERE! \nWith a flier in the mail or a door-to-door sales visit\, you’ll notice many mosquito control companies offering to spray your yard this time of year. Though this may seem like a quick and easy way to deal with mosquitoes\, it’s often an ineffective control strategy. Worse\, these insecticides are toxic to pollinators and other beneficial insects and may pose a risk to people\, too. Join us to discuss what we know about the risks residential mosquito sprays pose to pollinators\, including data from a Xerces Society study investigating insecticide drift into neighboring yards. \nThe good news: mosquito control doesn’t have to be toxic. We will also discuss practical\, more effective methods of mosquito control in residential landscapes and communities\, with policy solutions for mitigating harm from mosquito control services.
