“Then, one day, everything changed”: Making Sense of Loss or Difficulty Through Storytelling

When: July 20, 2-3pm

Where: Main Boulder Public Library, Canyon Theater

No registration required.

Learn how to process grief and make sense of difficulty by crafting it into a story.

Following a reading of his children’s book, “The Magic Ticket”, author, professor, and MFA director David Hicks, PhD will discuss (with Psychology Today blogger Michael Karson, PhD, J.D.,) how he processes the difficult events of his life by crafting them into stories.

Following a Q&A from the audience, David will ask participants to try it themselves—to begin to make sense of their own loss or difficulty through fiction-writing, allowing them to see themselves as a character with whom they can empathize. Using a tried-and-true formula (“Once upon a time… Then, one day…”), participants will learn how to identify, begin, and structure their own autobiographical story, and thus make sense of what they’ve been through. Fulcrum Publishing will sell signed copies of the book after the event.
