NEIS: A Night with the Experts
When: Sept 25, 6pm
Where: Virtual
The national pep-rally support for expanding nuclear power nationwide has had one major barrier it has not yet overcome: some states have a moratorium in place preventing the construction of new nuclear reactors until the federal government honors the law and its pledge to the country to establish a functional, environmentally responsible high-level radioactive waste disposal facility. This was supposed to have been achieved in 1997. It remains a broken promise, with no end in sight.
This program will examine why nuclear moratoria repeal in Illinois and around the nation is terrible energy and environmental policy, and has the potential of reversing gains made towards expanding renewable energy, energy storage and transmission. These lessons apply to all the other states whose moratorium is similarly under threat of repeal.
