Scientists Olga Wilhelmi and Jennifer Boehnert discuss why geography matters in understanding and reducing weather and climate risks. They will discuss the role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in climate research and action and illustrate how geospatial technology is not only enabling new scientific advancements, but also contributing to building community resilience to weather hazards and the changing climate.

Rick Tallman offers both the big picture as well as insights into two projects aiming to change that, and change it at scale. One project used a modular approach to erect a net zero residential high-rise in Seattle, the other, Shibusa Systems, creates a process to build low cost single homes in record time.

Life in the Cold: Winter Ecology

It may seem that life is slumbering during the cold winter months, but the non-human residents of OSMP are doing what they need to survive and thrive. Join us as we walk to the White Rocks trail, full of raptors and winter wildlife. We’ll talk about winter animal adaptations and look for prairie dogs, waterfowl, and bald eagles. This hike will be an easy, social walk, but be prepared for possible icy conditions. Bring binoculars to search for raptors along the White Rocks and waterfowl in the ponds.

Native Women and Allies Speak: What You Weren’t Taught in School, The Justice Film Series

In addition to a potent historical overview, this film shares three personal and moving stories about a Native child forced into a Canadian residential school, never to see his parents again; adoption of Native babies and children by whites; and ongoing, a 14-year battle with a Pennsylvania school district to eradicate their racist Redskins mascot that continues today.
