Protecting the Next Generations: Indigenous and Local Perspectives on the Future of Tailings Governance

October 7 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

- Free

Tailings facilities are often discussed as technical engineering challenges, yet for Indigenous Peoples and other local affected communities, they represent a much broader legacy of mining. Often, tailings facilities are unknown to communities; projects that are never fully explained in Free, Prior and Informed Consent processes or consultation meetings. It is crucial to know that long after mineral extraction ends, tailings remain embedded in Indigenous territories, shaping water/food security, health outcomes, livelihoods, cultural heritage, biodiversity, and the ability of communities to exercise their rights over generations.

Co-hosted by the Global Tailings Management Institute (GTMI), Earthworks, and Cultural Survival, this webinar will focus on bringing together institutional leadership and Indigenous voices in a shared dialogue ensuring that mining legacies are governed in ways that respect rights, protect territories, and contribute to lasting social and environmental resilience.
