For the past two centuries, human activity has changed the chemical makeup of our atmosphere, leading scientists to rename this period the ‘anthropogenic epoch’. As megacities continue growing throughout the world, so is air pollution. These developments will have significant effects on coming generations despite global agreements to reduce methane emissions by 30% in less than 10 years.
In her Explorer Series Lecture, NSF NCAR Scientist and Associate Director Dr. Pieternel Levelt will discuss how these satellites can help inform further research as well as climate policies all around the world.

One of the surest ways to cut through the anxiety of these times is taking action together in community: join SURJ members in conversation about our plans for 2024 to stop authoritarianism, defend the election, and go on offense in 2025 to advance an agenda of racial and economic justice. White people have an important role to play this year. If far right authoritarianism takes the White House and Congress in 2024, it will be because of the support of a largely white base. We have a responsibility to make sure other white people reject far right calls for division and instead see their fates as tied up with other working people. Our POC partners are getting their people in formation, and we need to do our part. SURJ is the largest organization in the country explicitly organizing white people for justice– and we’ve got a plan to win this year and beyond. Join us to learn more.
Since 2017, the Longmont Sustainability Coalition has brought diverse community perspectives together to share ideas, provide feedback, and advise city staff on emerging sustainability priorities. Each meeting includes a guest presentation from a local environmental expert, followed by a presentation from City Sustainability staff on current projects and priorities. Our speaker this month, Enrico Bonilauri of Emu, will review a study that evaluates several building standards for their capacities to meet your complete electrification goals. It turns out that some building standards allow a homeowner to shrink their consumption sufficiently to accommodate the additional load of an EV without expanding overall consumption.

We will see that, the worldwide recognition of the right to a healthy environment, together with the scientific evidence of climate change and its impacts, means that governments and corporations can be held accountable for decisions and actions that contribute to climate change.
