Join volunteer naturalists as we explore the evolution of biodiversity in Boulder County over time. What plants, animals, birds, and insects were present in 1720, 1820, 1920, 2020? How do these changes compare to biodiversity evolution over much longer periods of time on the front range? What animals, plants, and life forms might we experience on a hike in 2120? How might we respond to these unprecedented changes and help protect, or even restore, some of our ‘more than human kin’ that share our Boulder County home?

“Mindful Birding” at Goshawk Ridge
This outing's theme is "mindful birding" where we will spend quiet time at each of several stopping points to focus deeply on any birds that we are able to see and hear. The emphasis will not be on finding and identifying as many species as possible, but rather on thoroughly appreciating the ones we happen across. We'll consider how mindful techniques might help us improve as "conventional" birders too. This area boasts exceptional scenery and a variety of high-quality habitats. Restrooms are available near the meeting point, but not at the trailhead or along the trail. Plan on walking about two miles on gravel road.

The Staples, Snacks and Splurges of Colorado’s Hungry Birds
The Staples, Snacks and Splurges of Colorado’s Hungry Birds
In this presentation we will attempt to describe the wild foods of Colorado’s birds. They have their tried and true “go-to” items and they are champions of opportunism. The true joy of birding is the sense of discovery. Studying what birds eat is fun and full of surprises. It has long been the presenter’s contention that the skills and tools possessed by birders can be applied to more than “what is it?” and “how many are there?” The gaps in published bird life histories are MANY and we can fill them by living up to what the world calls us – “bird watchers”. By carefully observing a bird for just a few minutes beyond identification, we can gather valuable information on habitat, feeding habits and other behaviors. With our phones, point-and-shoots and mega-cameras we can document these things. And all are potentially useful to conservation. Let’s do it.
